1st Oct, Is Deadline For Modernization Of Taxi Service In Abuja, Transport Secretariat Reeled Out Other Guidelines
The Transport Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has released more guidelines for passenger service (commercial) vehicles, operating within the FCT. Kayode Opeifa, the Transport Secretary of FCTA, stated this in Abuja after a meeting with all the Licensed Taxi Operators. According to him:, all Taxis operating within the Abuja must be air-conditioned on or before Oct. 1, 2018. This comes as a relieve to taxi customers who have looked forward to improved quality of service for a long time.
It is important to say that the quality of taxi service has been poor especially due to the state of the vehicles which were mostly bought as fairly used vehicles. For a vehicle to have AC, it will need to be up to certain mechanical standard , by implication, many of the rickety vehicles will not meet up to the standard and will have to go off the roads. While a greater majority of the taxi operators are crying foul on the new policy as some of them will go out of business, the implementation of this will no doubt sanitize the mobility system in the Capital City of Abuja. “All passenger service (commercial) vehicles must carry two (2) valid certificate of road-worthiness from FCT Computerized Roadworthy Test Centre issued in the last 9 months,"
“Tricycles are to operate only at the designated routes as approved and assigned to the particular operator by the transportation secretariat."
Tricycles and Motorcycles are to be operated only by riders with valid FCTA issued Riders Card,’’ he said.
“All passenger service (commercial) vehicles must be registered in Abuja and must carry FCT number plate with effect from Oct. 1, 2018"
